"Hold Your Tongues" arose out of an 18 month study in Paul's first Corinthian epistle conducted in the weekly prayer meetings. It represents an honest attempt to understand exactly what was happening in the church of Corinth that led Paul to devote more than a complete chapter to the subject of speaking in tongues. Was it a manifestation of something like the modern "glossolalia", or were the Corinthians merely using natural languages in the church services? The answer to that question is vital to understand the Scriptural meaning and use of tongues. It is to the task of finding the answer from the Old and New Testaments that the author, prayerfully, has dedicated himself. The Bible is the supreme authority in matters of faith and practice. If the Bible commands a behaviour then Christians should be obedient and do it. If the Bible condemns a behaviour then Christians must, in obedience to the authority of the Word, eschew it. "Hold Your Tongues" should be a help to those who are confused by the subject of speaking in tongues, but who want to be obedient to God's Word and do what is right in the eyes of the Lord.
